The Starlet GT Turbo was introduced in Japan in December 1989, using the turbocharged 4E-FTE engine. It has become very popular in the UK as a private import.

There were 2 Limited edition versions of the GT Turbo; GT Limited and the GT Advance. Both featured small changes such as different steering wheels and gear knobs, a rear strut bar, ABS was also present on the later versions. These models also featured an optional limited slip differential in the C153 type gearbox.

There was a second minor facelift in May 1994 to include a meshed grille and twin round headlights.
